Changing the port for SharePoint 2010 Central Administration

by Scosby Tuesday, September 21, 2010
After reading a rather ridiculous blog post, where the author's solution was to create Alternate Access Mappings, I thought I'd address how to change the port with less confusion.  Using the Set-SPCentralAdministration cmdlet, you can change the port hosting your Central Administration web application. You can easily change it as follows: Set-SPCentralAdministration –Port 8282  You can read more about the Set-SPCentralAdministration cmdlet here: http://technet.m... [More]

Performing long running operations in Windows Forms on another thread

by Scosby Monday, August 16, 2010
This post will introduce developers to the BackgroundWorker class. Often, people ask how to perform an asynchronous operation and update their User Interface (UI) with some kind of progress information. The purpose of this post is to provide an overview of using the BackgroundWorker class to accomplish this common task. You can download the full class file at the end of this post. While you could use a timer to perform an asynchronous operation, I feel the BackgroundWorker class is the better c... [More]

Visual Studio no longer lets you add a new item from the installed templates

by Scosby Wednesday, July 28, 2010
I had this problem with Visual Studio over the last few weeks and finally decided to fix it today. I could no longer add a new Windows Form or User Control to my project...any project new or old, in fact. I could add classes, ect but not a Form or User Control. Well, I did some digging and discovered that if you call devenv.exe /setup it will force Visual Studio to "rebuild" all of your available templates. Problem solved! This command line switch fixed my problem and hopefully it is helpful to... [More]

Localizing UTC DateTime values from Javascript

by Scosby Monday, July 5, 2010
I had a bunch of <td> tags with a DateTime value for the innerText. Based on convention, the data store keeps this value in UTC time. I wanted to post a bit of javascript that translated the innerText to the client's current time zone. I placed this snippet in my aspx page's head section. I used an ASP.NET GridView to render the data and for the ItemTemplate I simply used an Eval expression to write the time to the <td>. This is just a short and sweet s... [More]

Website Updates

by Scosby Friday, May 28, 2010
I finally added paging to the albums and photos pages. Much better. Additionally, I locked down the registration page with recaptcha. The albums are now sorted in descending order, so the newest ones will show up first. More tweaks coming! Time for bed. -Scosby

Another blog update - custom themes and code changes!

by Scosby Wednesday, May 19, 2010
I created a new theme for the standard and mobile styles. Basically, I copied the original ones and fixed the gross parts. Additionally, I made some minor code changes to a couple of pieces, all good and very subtle. I'll be posting my new themes along with a change log for the source if I get around to it. In the meantime, enjoy!
